Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)

An enlargement of breast tissue in men is known as Gynecomastia. It is considered a medical condition that can appear during puberty or later during the adolescence time frame, and it often corrects itself or improves as men age.  This condition is not considered serious, but if it does not seem to improve or gets worse with obesity and age, it honestly can be socially difficult for some males.  Gynecomastia is most commonly caused by obesity although some steroids, marijuana, genetic disorders, tumors and even some medications have been linked to this medical condition.

There are various treatment options available for our patients whom have gynecomastia, which can be completed in our office or under general anesthesia. To remove a fatty component during gynecomastia, ultrasonic liposuction is typically used by Dr. Hankins. When using this technique, liposuction helps remove the thick tissue within the breast. If by chance there is significant amounts of glandular tissue present in the male’s breast, Dr. Hankins recommends using a different approach than liposuction that entails a small incision under the areola so that the tissue can be removed. As with other scars, if treated properly, this scar in the breast fold will head and will fade with time.

After approximately a week, the patient should be recovering nicely depending upon the amount of skin removal.  To help reduce swelling, each patient wears a compression garment for six weeks after surgery.
